Professor Kuhutyak is the founder of the Department of Ethnology and Archeology at the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (he was the Head of the Department from 2005 to autumn 2014) and the Director of the Educational and Research Institute of History, Ethnology and Archeology of the Carpathians (since 2008). On the initiative of M. Kuhutyak, the Carpathian Ethnological and Archaeological Expedition was created, which began its activities in 2006 to identify, map and survey ancient and medieval religious monuments of the Carpathian region, defence and production complexes of the region, trans-Carpathian routes, study historical toponymy, traditional culture of ethnographic groups, and the history of the national liberation movement. A kind of inventory of the ethno-historical and cultural heritage of the Carpathian region has made it possible to identify more than 300 hitherto unknown monuments from different historical periods. For example, more than 150 unique sites have been located in the Galician Hutsul region alone. Among them are dozens of medieval settlements, monasteries, castles and defensive courtyards, salt production complexes concentrated near ancient roads and passes. More than three dozen rock sanctuaries with unique sculptural, relief and graphic images have been brought back from oblivion. Along with the well-known petroglyphic complexes of the Balkans, the Caucasus, Karelia, the Andes, and Tibet, a large group of ‘rock temples’ in the Ukrainian Carpathians has been discovered. The discovery of many archaeological, historical, cultural and ethnographic monuments contributed to the development of the region’s tourism sector and increased the investment attractiveness of the Carpathian region. The introduction of these monuments into scientific and tourist circulation allows developing new tourist routes, publishing scientific monographs, booklets and guidebooks, opening new museums and reserves, and promotes increased attention to the region and the comprehensive preservation of its natural and historical environment.
Under the leadership of Kuhutyak M.V., the following research works are carried out: 1. Historical, cultural and ethno-social processes in the Carpathian region (state registration number 0109V000838). 2. Ethno-cultural processes in the Carpathian region (Ivano-Frankivsk region) (state registration number 0109V000839).

A number of monographs have been published on these topics, presenting the results of research on ancient and medieval sacred monuments. Among them are ‘Prykarpattia: Heritage of the Ages’ (2006), ‘Ternoshorsk Rock Sanctuary in the Carpathians’ (2007), ‘Stone Antiquities of Kosmach’ (2007), ‘Rock Sanctuaries of Sokilsky Peaks’ (2008), ‘Antiquities of Hutsulshchyna. Sacred Heritage of the Hutsul Region’ (2011), ’Antiquities of the Hutsul Region. Sources on the ethnic history of the population of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Vol. 1: Hoshiv Monastery in the written historical sources of the XVI – XX centuries’ (2018).
