He has been a leading expert in the field of Ukrainian archeology for over 40 years of his life. Since 1989, B. Tomenchuk has been researching ancient Halych. First, as the head of the Old Rus detachment of the Galician Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk Museum of Local Lore and the National Reserve “Ancient Halych,” and since 2000 – as the head of the Galician Archaeological Expedition of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University. He also served as the head of the student archaeological practice. The most interesting archaeological sites were: the chronicle mound “Halychyna Mohyla”, five wooden palace complexes, residential and economic development of the childhood home of Prince Halych and its defensive fortifications. Having spent more than 30 archaeological seasons on the territory of ancient Halych, B. Tomenchuk formed a new concept of the origin and evolution of Halych and the Galician land, which is the basis of his latest scientific research.
As the head of archaeological expeditions, B. Tomenchuk conducted 45 archaeological seasons, during which, in particular, such chronicle cities as Vasyliv, Kuchelmin, and Bykoven on the Dniester, Oleshkiv on the Prut, and Horodok on the Cheremosh were investigated. He excavated dozens of defensive structures and more than a hundred residential, economic, and craft buildings of the tenth and fourteenth centuries. In addition, he studied 4 wooden churches of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, including the unique in Europe Oleshkiv rotunda-tomb (20 burials under the floor). In total, B. Tomenchuk has studied more than 500 ancient burials of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. in addition, B. Tomenchuk was a scientific consultant during the excavations of the graves of victims of Stalinist repression in Demianovyi Laz, Posich, and on the territory of the memorial park in Ivano-Frankivsk.
In 2010-2015, B. Tomenchuk conducted protective archaeological research of the Manyava Skete as part of the Carpathian Historical and Archaeological Expedition of the University (headed by M. Kuhutyak) and the Carpathian Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (headed by V. Romanets). They studied the defense system and the construction of the central monastery settlement. In addition, the foundations of two wooden churches in the Skytyk and Voznesinka tracts were investigated.
In 2016-2021, B. Tomenchuk conducted protective archaeological research of the Hoshiv Monastery as part of the Carpathian Historical and Archaeological Expedition of the University and the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (supervisors: M. Kuhutyak and V. Romanets). The infrastructure of the monastery complex was studied. In particular, the foundations of two wooden churches in the Chornyi Dilok tract were discovered and investigated. In addition, at this time, protective archaeological research was conducted on the late medieval castle and monastery in the vicinity of Dolyna. The ancient infrastructure of Dolyna was also studied separately.
As a lecturer, he teaches standard courses:
“History of Ancient Civilizations”, ‘History of the Ancient East’, ‘History of Ancient Civilizations’, ‘History of Ancient Greece and Rome’, ‘Trans-Carpathian Routes in the Ethnoculture of the Peoples of the Carpathian Region’, ‘Religious Ethnology’, ‘Comparative Ethnoarchaeology’, ‘Ethnocultural Processes in the Carpathian Region’, ‘Ecosystem in the Ethnoculture of the Ancient Population of the Eastern Carpathian Region’, ‘Archaeology of Halych and the Galician Land’.
During the educational process at the university, Bohdan Tomenchuk supervises bachelor’s, master’s and PhD research in the field of archaeology and ethnoarchaeology.
Bohdan Petrovych Tomenchuk is the author of more than 150 scientific articles and 10 monographs, including 5 individual ones.
